Something happens to a person when as a profession, they spend a considerable part of their waking hours with humans significantly younger than themselves. Teachers are a bit different in the way they process the world. I’m not sure if it’s the chicken or the egg. Maybe because they’re different, they’re drawn to education. Maybe it’s that aforementioned exposure to and engagement with a room full of others who are alike in age and anywhere from four to 40 years younger.
Regardless why, Teacher Brain is my attempt to capture and distill this observation during my four years of working in the crucible of an urban charter high school with some of the best colleagues I’ve ever had.
Part memoir, part mission, Teacher Brain reflects the strengths of a teacher along with those beliefs and behaviors that could keep us from being successful in the ever changing landscape of the field.
I plan to publish in the spring of 2015. Stay tuned here for updates.
